How do I get a PCA Assessment?
Contact our agency so we may determine your program eligibility and gather your demographic information. We will then contact the county you live in to request for a PCA assessment to be completed.
How long does the county have to do a PCA assessment?
After a PCA referral has been made to the county they have 30 days to conduct the assessment. Most often an assessment is done before 30 days.
How many hours of service do I get?
It is difficult to tell how many PCA hours any one personal will receive. Typically people get anywhere from 2 to 6 hours per day. Some people get as much as 10 hours per day or more. It all depends on your personal needs as determined once your PCA assessment has been completed by the Public Health Nurse.
How much does service cost?
PCA services are free for most people on Medical Assistance. There are special cases where some people will have a Spend-down.
My PCA hours were cut, what can I do?
If your PCA hours were reduced or eliminated or if you feel that you did not get a fair assessment you have the right to a PCA Appeal.
Are my documents confidential?

I am going out of town, can I receive PCA services while out of town?
Yes, you can. Generally speaking you can receive PCA services while you are outside of Minnesota for educational or training purposes, employment or vacation. However, you cannot receive PCA services if you are outside of the United States
My PCA hours were cut, what will happen now?
If your PCA hours are reduced state law requires them to be continued at the level prior to the reduction for 30 days of the new service authorization.
What are qualified PCA services?
PCA services or Personal Care Assistant services are a type of non-medical Home Care Service that helps people with activities of daily living that may be difficult due to their special health care needs. What is involved during a PCA assessment?
During a PCA assessment, a nurse will ask you a number of questions to determine your personal needs. This assessment can take up to 2 hours or less. We developed Your PCA Assessment and Care Plan to outline and help with the process of making sure your needs are meet once you are approved for PCA services.
Can I qualify for Medical Assistance?
The best way to tell if you qualify for medical assistance is to contact your county human services department. Can my PCA be paid for the time spent driving me to my appointment?
Yes, PCA’s can be paid for their travel time? Your PCA is paid accompanying you while you are being transported to the destination where your PCA will assist you in the community (Doctor\`s Appointment, Church, Etc.). It is our company policy that PCA\`s should not transport you in their personal vehicles for insurance reasons. Instead, you should take public transportation, metro mobility, or have the PCA drive your vehicle.
Can my PCA accompany me to church?
Your PCA can accompany you to church or any other community activity.
Can my PCA accompany me to a doctors appointment?
Your PCA can come with you to doctor appointments and can even help you make them if necessary. However they cannot transport you in their personal vehicle.
Can my PCA work with me at the PCA's home?
Unfortunately, according to state requirements PCA services cannot be billed for if they are delivered in the PCA’s home. The one exception to the rule is when the PCA and recipient live together
Do I have to use my PCA hrs everyday?
No, you will be assessed for a daily amount of PCA hours, but you can use them flexibly as necessary. For example, you may choose to get help just two or three days per week; or if you are a parent you may choose to use a greater of number of hours during the summer but less during the school year.
Do I qualify for PCA services?
In order to qualify to receive PCA services you need to be eligible for Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare (pregnant women and children under age 21) and have a need for services. Meaning you need help with your daily activities such as bathing, grooming, dressing, or participating in the community because of special health care needs including behavior and mental health needs.
